<p>You  can take charcoal to wipe out decades of toxic heavy metals that may have been  building up in your body. Harmful metals like arsenic, copper, mercury, and  lead.</p>
<p>You’re  exposed to these <a href="http://www.alsearsmd.com/blood-toxins/">toxins</a> every single day. They enter your body through the air  you breathe, the water you drink, the food you eat, and even through your skin.</p>
<p>Very  few doctors realize how powerful this stuff is as a way to detox. In fact, many  doctors fail to see the benefit of detoxification at all. Mainstream medicine  often depicts detox believers as wacko, left-wing tree huggers who don’t know  what they’re doing.</p>

<p>I  regularly use charcoal as part of my personal detox plan. And I recommend it to  patients I see in my clinic.</p>
<p>It’s  best to use a powder form, mixed into a liquid. Tablets or capsules take too  long to absorb and release the activated charcoal. And the dose is usually too  small to do the job.</p>
<p>Take  20-30 grams a day of powdered activated charcoal (in divided doses) mixed with  water over a period of 1-2 weeks.</p>
<p>We’re  currently testing a powdered charcoal drink mix that will be included in the  Primal Force line of supplements. It’s not quite ready yet, but once it is,  you’ll be the first to know.</p>
<p>In  the meantime, you can look for activated charcoal powder in your local  health-food store.</p>

<p>Most  of my patients figure as long as they don’t overuse alcohol or drugs, their  liver is safe.</p>
<p>But  alcohol isn’t your biggest worry.</p>
<p>If  you’re overweight, your liver is in <em>real </em>trouble.</p>
<p>Evidence  suggests that alcohol contributes to only 6% of liver damage. The much higher  risk factor for liver damage is obesity. It alone contributes to 52% of liver  disease.<sub>1</sub></p>
<p>And  when an overweight person drinks, the chances of liver damage are dramatically  increased. Let’s look at some real numbers so you can see exactly what the  risks are.</p>
<p>If  you’re overweight, you have a twofold increased risk. If you’re obese (body  mass index over 30), you’re four times more likely to develop liver damage than  a normal-weight individual.<sub>1</sub></p>
<p>When  you add alcohol to the mix, it gets even scarier. For example, a normal-weight  individual who drinks two or more glasses of alcohol a day has a two-fold risk  of liver damage. While an obese person with the same drinking habits has a  5.9-fold increase – that’s nearly six times the chance of liver disease. And  overweight people drinking two or more glasses a day have a 3.4-fold increased  risk.<sub>1</sub></p>
<p>This  is bad news. Your liver is the most overlooked and often ignored organ in your  body. But it’s arguably the most important.</p>
<p>Your  liver:</p>
<ul type="disc">
<li>Manufactures a full quart of bile daily to break down fat.       Bile is the yellowish-green fluid that’s produced in your liver and stored       in your gallbladder. Bile also plays an essential role in emulsifying – or       breaking down – the fats you eat. Think of bile as a detergent that gets       rid of grease from your dishes. </li>
</ul>
<ul type="disc">
<li>Filters harmful toxins and substances (including alcohol) out       of nearly 100 gallons of blood every day and allows nutrients to get to       your cells. </li>
</ul>
<ul type="disc">
<li>Produces more than 13,000 crucial chemicals and hormones       including cholesterol, testosterone, and estrogen. Plus, your liver       manages over 50,000 enzymes to maintain a healthy body. </li>
</ul>
<ul type="disc">
<li>Regulates blood sugar levels and prevents dangerous spikes       and lows. </li>
</ul>
<ul type="disc">
<li>Stores essential vitamins and minerals – including vitamins       A, D, K, and B12 – to help keep your bones from crumbling. </li>
</ul>
<ul type="disc">
<li>Detoxifies all internal and external environmental       pollutants. If your liver didn’t continually remove metabolic trash and       toxins from your blood, you would be dead in a matter of hours. </li>
</ul>
<p>Even  more important than what your liver does, is what happens when your liver is  not working properly.</p>
<p>To  get rid of all the waste, your liver will create balls of fat that collect in  the liver itself. (This is the start of a “fatty liver.”) Those fats will also  spill into your blood in the form of triglycerides, which boost your risk of a  heart related disaster.</p>
<p>Your  liver will also move those toxins to different places in your body, including  your skin. In fact, many skin conditions like dandruff and psoriasis are  tell-tale signs of a sick liver.</p>
<p>All  of this contributes to a systemic poisoning that zaps your strength, vitality –  even your sex drive. Chronic fatigue, high blood pressure, autoimmune  disorders, and “problems in the bedroom,” often have a connection to a sluggish  or sick liver.</p>
<p>If  you haven’t started on a weight-reduction plan, get started today. It doesn’t  have to be difficult. My most important rule of healthy weight reduction is  simply to eat foods in their natural, unadulterated forms. That includes red  meat, fish, poultry, dairy, eggs, most vegetables, most fruits, and nuts.<sub>2</sub></p>
<p>Avoid  anything processed or refined. And start a heart healthy exercise program –  like my PACE program, which I’ve discussed in previous letters. You can start  out easy with just a few walks around the block – just 10 minutes of variable  intensity exercise each day.</p>
<p>In  addition, you can also <strong><em>detox  your liver. </em></strong></p>
<p>Your  liver wasn’t designed to function in a world full of toxins and other deadly  agents. You need to give it a good cleaning at least twice a year, even if your  liver is perfectly healthy.</p>

<p>Our environment has changed. The last 100 years has wiped out millions of years of pure, clean food and water.</p>
<p>And our bodies haven’t adapted quickly enough. We weren’t designed to  live in our current world of man-made chemicals, toxins and pollutants.</p>
<p>You don’t even have a clean slate as a newborn. When tested, newborn  babies have an average of 200 industrial chemicals and pollutants  already present in their blood.<sub>1</sub></p>
<p>Then, as you make your way through life, a flood of new toxins enter  your body through the air you breathe, the water you drink, the food  you eat every day, and even through your skin.</p>
<p>Getting rid of these toxins will help you live a longer, healthier life.</p>
<p>You can improve:</p>
<ul>
<li>heart health</li>
<li> nagging pains</li>
<li>digestive troubles</li>
<li>mood</li>
<li>even poor eyesight </li>

<p>Detoxifying your body can boost your immune system, clear your mind, balance your hormones,  and much more.</p>
<p>Chances are you have some level of exposure to heavy metals. Arsenic  and lead are among the most common forms of heavy metal toxicity.<sub>2</sub> These poisons are used in the manufacturing processes of things like  pesticides, glass, wood preservatives, fertilizers, paint, batteries,  plumbing, and ink. Not to mention hobby paints, hair coloring, and  cosmetics.</p>
<p>The best way to detoxify your body is with <em>chelation</em>.  The word chelate comes from the Greek word chele, which means claw. And  it describes the process by which a molecule from a nutrient (or  chemical) surrounds and binds (or grabs like a claw) to metal toxins  such as mercury, lead, and arsenic, and carries them out of your body  through your kidneys and out in your urine.</p>
<p>There are some safe, natural methods of chelation that I recommend for removing toxic metals from your body.</p>
<ul>
<li> You can take chlorella, a form of dried algae. You can find it in most  health food stores. Take one 500 mg capsule per day initially. Some  people are sensitive to chlorella. If you start experiencing nausea or  burping, it means your body can’t tolerate it and you should go for  another option.
<p> If you don’t have a  sensitivity, work up slowly over one to two weeks to a dose of one  teaspoon (ten tablets or capsules) per day until your levels come down.</li>
</ul>

<p>Fresh cilantro has also been shown to remove mercury from the body. About a teaspoon a day should work.</p>
</li>
<li>
<p>Garlic is also a good option. Three cloves of fresh garlic per day should help.</p>
</li>
